About The Discovery Series

The Discovery Series at The Barns at Wolf Trap offers artists and patrons alike a unique environment in which to enjoy an intimate musical experience. Venue and program format work together to create a stimulating evening of entertainment and enlightenment. Recent seasons have featured artists such as David Finckel & Wu Han, Isaac Stern, Emanuel Ax, Takács Quartet, André Watts, Christopher Parkening, Richard Stolzman, Young Quartet, Turtle Island Quartet, Leila Josefowicz, the Ahn Trio, the Brentano String Quartet, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Nathan Gunn, the American Brass Quintet, and Trio Solisti.

Discover the Nuances

The evening is hosted by international broadcaster Rich Kleinfeldt, current host of nationally syndicated radio programs Indianapolis-on-the-Air and Center Stage from Wolf Trap. Mr. Kleinfeldt introduces the program and offers brief historical notes and anecdotes. The audience is encouraged to submit written questions for the artists, which are then presented in a short question-and-answer period immediately after intermission. The performance is followed by a free dessert reception during which the artists are invited to mingle with patrons and guests.

Discover Center Stage from Wolf Trap

2009 Center Stage program

Center Stage from Wolf Trap is a nationally syndicated radio series compiled from live Discovery Series performances. Debuted in 1999 and carried on nearly 250 stations nationwide, the series offers listeners a fresh format in American radio. Co-hosts Rich Kleinfeldt and Bill McGlaughlin (St. Paul Sunday) engage in unscripted, insightful conversations providing in-depth analyses of the musical selections and personal commentary. Center Stage from Wolf Trap also introduces listeners to contemporary works by some of today's leading composers. This special segment of each program, "Off the Beaten Track," juxtaposes less familiar works with pieces from the standard repertoire.

A Mission at Work

Catherine Filene Shouse, Wolf Trap's founder, provided a mandate: to preserve significant artistic traditions while supporting new initiatives; foster the careers of the next generation of artists; and to make education a key component in its artistic offerings. The Discovery Series encompasses all aspects of this mission, and it honors Mrs. Shouse with an annual Founder's Day concert.

Schedule, program, and artists are subject to change.
