Hothouse Flowers
Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 8 p.m.
$22
Repeatedly compared to Bob Dylan, Hothouse Flowers offers traditional Irish songs, inspired from soul, gospel, and rock. These childhood friends continue to blaze trails with their adventurous sound and electric live performances and have secured a cult-like following in the U.S. The group started as a Dublin street-performance act before signing with U2’s label. Topping the Irish and Britain charts with their debut album, People, in 1988, Rolling Stone magazine once dubbed them “the best unsigned band in Europe”. Their fifth and latest album Into Your Heart is the sound of a band in love with their music and completely comfortable with the roots and sources that give their music its unique vibe.

His musical versatility has led to his working with some of the world’s most well-respected and relevant musicans, including Elvis Costello, Loudon Wainwright III, Vic Chesnutt, Bono, Brian Eno, Jon Hassell, and Daniel Lanois.
Rudy Royston (drummer) appeared with Frisell in spring 2009 at The Barns. Eyvind Kang (violin) is known for his experimentations with classical and jazz violin and will perform at The Barns for the first time.

A prominent leader of the new folk movement, John Gorka comes to The Barns armed with his new release, So Dark You See, an intimate, vocal and guitar centered album. His engaging baritone and captivating lyrics offer listeners a bittersweet experience with intimate confessional songs about love and loss, everyday life in his neighborhood, the political landscape, and unmitigated joy. Inspired by singer/songwriters Tom Paxton and Eric Anderson, Gorka started playing open-mic nights in college and before long was a peer among his icons, winning Kerrville Folk Festival’s prestigious New Folk Award in 1984. Gorka scored significant airplay from country outlets with the single and video "When She Kisses Me" from his Temporary Road album, resulting in tours supporting Mary Chapin Carpenter and Nanci Griffith. 2003 saw the release of Old Futures Gone. It was followed in 2006 by Writing in the Margins.
