Commissioned Works


Past commissions of new works by Wolf Trap Foundation:

  • Doug Varone & Dancers (2007) a world premiere choreographed by Doug Varone. Hailed for their physically daring movements, this award-winning comany "has produced some of modern dance's most engrossing works." - New York Times
  • Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE PHILADANCO (2006) Dance Magazine calls PHILADANCO "a company that can do more that just anything," and The Washington Post exclaims, "Brown's choreography has zoomed to the forefront of modern dance." Both companies shared the stage in a world premiere choreographed by Ron Brown.
  • Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre (2004) made a triumphant return on August 24, 2004 with a world premiere ballet, Concerto Caprice, commissioned by the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts. Choreographed by renowned dancer and Vienna, Virginia native Susan Shields, the piece was set to the music of Vittorio Giannini and featured choreographic patterns reminiscent of the legendary George Balanchine.
  • Ballet Hispanico (2002), as part of their June 18, 2002 performance at the Filene Center, unveiled a dance piece created by famed choreographer Ann Reinking.
  • Kay's Lilt (1999), a new ballet honoring Wolf Trap's founder Catherine Filene Shouse created by African-American choreographer Randy Duncan, was commissioned by Wolf Trap and performed by The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. Kay's Lilt was performed on the Filene Center stage on June 29th to the music of Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me."
  • Monsters of Grace (1998), a 68-minute 3-D film, created by renowned composer Philip Glass and award-winning theater designer Robert Wilson. This avant-garde theatrical piece featured live orchestra, multimedia technology, and 3-D computer animation.
  • An Evening of Photochoreography by James Westwater (1998) set large screen images of Wolf Trap and other national parks to the music of Copland's Appalachian Spring and Fanfare for the Common Man and Barber's Adagio for Strings performed live by the National Symphony Orchestra.
  • The Miami City Ballet was commissioned in 1996 to create The Big Band: SUPERMEGATROID, choreographed by Jimmy Gamonet De Los Heros, which has been performed over 200 times since its Wolf Trap premiere.
